This innovative international education program is made up of themed courses that students can select based on their specific interests.

Accompanying the academic offering is a cultural and linguistic program called “The Intercultural Learning Initiative.” This component of the program allows participants to share aspects of their own languages and cultures and get to know diverse sociocultural and linguistic expressions of Argentina and the Rio de la Plata region.

The courses approach contemporary themes in Argentina and Latin Americana. They are taught online through synchronous and asynchronous lectures, seminars, multimedia resources, and video conferences with experts in the field. The courses are intended for Spanish speakers or learners who have an interest in Latin America and prior training in social sciences and the humanities.

Based on their academic interests, availability,  and language proficiency, students can decide which course or courses are best for them!

CLASS ENVIRONMENT

Despite the virtual nature of the program, our classes use participatory and discussion-based pedagogy to encourage meaningful student participation. The classes will consist of live lectures and discussion sessions, interactive activities, multimedia resources, forum debates, and online essay submission and feedback, which will give students the possibility to work with professors and students from different disciplines and engage deeply with the course material. As part of the course schedule, students will have the opportunity to virtually interview esteemed guest lecturers such as politicians, social activists, policymakers, local artists, and more. The program will contain a mix of students from the United States, Canada, and Latin America, allowing participants to build connections with students from other cultures and social realities.

GENDER, HEALTH AND REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE IN LATIN AMERICA

This course explores intersections between gender, health, and diversity with a specific focus in reproductive justice in Latin America. We will discuss research about planning family programs implemented during the Cold War in the region and socio-anthropological studies that explore policies, debates, and experiences connected to menstruation, contreception, birth, and abortion. The course will also  investigate  models of health systems and feminist health agendas in pursuit of reproductive justice. We will also discuss the role of traditional medicine and spirituality and its relation with feminism and the hegemonic medical system.

HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVISM AND STRUGGLES FOR MEMORY AND JUSTICE

The objective of this course is to address the social debates surrounding the  crimes committed by the state  during the last Argentine military dictatorship (1976-1983) and the role of human rights activism in the construction of democracy afterwards. The class will introduce a set of discussions on human rights in Argentina and the struggles undertaken to denounce the repressive practices of state institutions. The course will focus on what has become known as the Process of Memory, Truth and Justice. We will also explain how human rights activism has expanded its agenda since the recovery of democracy to include issues such as police and institutional violence. Students are expected to reflect critically on the topics addressed and assess similarities and differences between human rights movements in the North and the Global South in order to debate the universality of the concept of Human Rights.

Latin America: Contemporary Environmental Challenges

This course analyzes the main environmental challenges that the Latin American region currently faces. Students will develop a critical understanding of environmental policy in Latin America and its repercussions at a local and regional level. The course is organized around four axes: models of environmental development, neo extractivism, climate change and energy transition, and the energy of the region. These themes are developed through environmental theories and analysis of case studies in the region.

African Cultures, Racism, and Resistance in Latin America

This course examines the sociocultural dynamics of African and Afro-descendant populations in Latin America. With a specific focus in Argentina, the course will analyze processes of racism and invisibilization of the Afro-Argentine population along with contemporary resistance and revizibiliation.

INTERCULTURAL LEARNING INITIATIVE

Language and Culture

15 hours

 

Through the Intercultural Learning Initiative, students will be virtually immersed  in the local culture and language of the Rio de la Plata region. This initiative provides the chance to add an elective extra credit and receive the ADELA-Study Abroad Intercultural Certificate.

This  component of the program will consist of a range of  online culture activities such as virtual museum visits, virtual tours of the city, and master classes in tango, candombe drumming, and Argentine cooking. Students will also have the opportunity to interview cultural representatives of the Rio de la Plata region.

The objective of this program is to provide students with the tools to compare Argentine culture with their own experiences to gain an intercultural perspective. Additionally, interacting with students from Latin America, Canada and the US will enable participants to learn about distinct cultures and realities.
