In December 2014, the Seminar “Theories of Globalization” which is annually taught as part of the Global Studies Programme’ second semester at FLACSO Argentina, became the “Hermann Schwengel Chair in Theories of Globalization“, in memory of one of the programme’s creators, who passed away in December 7th 2014 after a serious illness.

Prof. Dr. Hermann Schwengel, was Director of the Department of Sociology, Professor and Vice started in 2002 and quickly became an award-winning and very successful academic programme that convokes students from all over the world every year.

In addition to their contributions to the GSP, he was lecturer at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium, member of the commission for fundamental values of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, a consultant for the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and a member of the editorial boards in numerous scientific journals of international renown.

With the sad leaving of Prof. Dr. Schwengel the GSP’s community has lost a very esteemed and admired member. This chair will be a constant reminder of his legacy, not only as an academic, but also as a person. The chair will convene each year outstanding scholars in the field of globalization studies from the rest of the programme’s partner Universities: Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Germany), Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok (Thailand) and Jawaharlal Nehru Universitiy, New Delhi (India), University of Cape Town (South Africa). This seminar will be destined to students from the Master’s Programme and from the Certificate in Global Studies, as well as to students from other academic programmes at FLACSO Argentina, turning its teaching in a highly enriching academic experience for local and international students.

The first seminar of the chair will be “The new spirit of capitalism and Its Critics“, lectured by Prof. Dr. Ulrich Bröckling from Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, which will take place from 21 to 25 September 2015.
